We support a community in a low-income area of the Western suburbs, where many gather at a lovely small church. It’s a warm place where they find counsel, guidance, and encouragement from the caring pastor.
One weekend, while travelling with a group of bikers, we met some truly wonderful people. As we shared what we do, one of them mentioned he had some mattresses and asked if we could use them. Excited, we quickly made a call and received a very positive response, scheduling a time to pick them up. I had expected just a few- maybe three or five- but to our surprise, there turned out to be 21! This number, 3 times 7, symbolises spiritual perfection and divine completion—truly a reminder that God works in mysterious ways!
Luckily, we knew of homes that needed these mattresses. When we dropped some off at the church, the pastor shared a touching story about a family of five sharing just one bed, so no one would have to sleep on the floor. Can you imagine sharing a bed with four other people, including three children, to get a good night’s sleep before facing tomorrow’s challenges? That’s truly tough. Their gratitude was incredibly heartwarming.
Another place where the remaining mattresses are used is at a shelter for abused women and children. Often, there aren’t enough beds for everyone, especially for those who arrive without notice—’walk-ins.” As a result, mothers often share beds with their children. Nowadays, kids have their very own “big bed” and sleep right beside their mom, creating a little more comfort and security.
